Montgomery County, "The Birthplace
of the Lone Star Flag", owes that distinction
to Charles Bellinger Stewart. Dr. Stewart,
from South Carolina, became friends with
Stephen F. Austin while both were visiting
New Orleans in the late 1820's. In 1830
Dr. Stewart headed for Brazoria, Texas as
part of Austin's second colony. There he
began to take an active part in the political
affairs of Texas.
Dr. Stewart was the first signer of the
document declaring Texas' independence from
Mexico. He served in the Army of the Republic
of Texas and was the interpreter between
General Sam Houston and General Santa Anna.
In 1837 Dr. Stewart settled in western Montgomery
County.
At the request of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the
President of the Republic of Texas, Dr.
Stewart designed the Lone Star Flag. In
1839 the Third Congress of the Republic
of Texas adopted Dr. Stewart's design. On
May 30, 1997, Governor George W. Bush signed
House Resolution 1123 recognizing Montgomery
County as the birthplace of the Lone Star
Flag.
